A historic Austin corner faces major changes as developers move forward with plans to demolish the iconic 6th and Lamar location. The site, once home to the beloved Waterloo Records for over 40 years, is now set for redevelopment into a modern high-rise.

The city's Development Services Department has confirmed that a site plan application has been submitted for demolition. Developers want to replace the current building with a 112-foot glass tower featuring nine stories of mixed-use space.

The proposed development would include 93 residential units and 18,000 square feet for retail and restaurant businesses. Current tenants like 24 Diner and Amy's Ice Creams would be affected by the demolition plans.

The project must undergo extensive city review before construction can begin. According to Austin's Build + Connect portal, department reviews are scheduled for completion by January 8th or 9th.

This redevelopment represents the ongoing tension in Austin between preserving the city's cultural identity and accommodating rapid growth. The transformation of this music lovers' hub symbolizes Austin's evolving landscape.
